Students have been hard at work, academically and socially, in the classroom and they have really hit their 2nd grade stride! We receive a lot of positive feedback from specials teachers about their performance in P.E., music, art, and Spanish. I cannot say enough positive things about their daily conduct. All of the frogs exercise kindness, patience, and hard work on a daily basis. This is why they have been filling their class bucket so routinely!
SEL:
Students reviewed all of our previously-taught skills for learning. One of these skills is being assertive. Being assertive is getting what we want or need, by expressing ourselves in a nice way. An example of being assertive in the classroom is asking for help when we need it. Listening and focusing are also skills for learning. We reviewed different strategies to help us be more effective listeners and to help us focus when there are environmental distractions (ex: friends talking) or inner distractions (ex: being excited for a playdate). These strategies included taking deep breaths, taking a stretch, and anything else that works for an individual. Our newest skill for learning is self-talk. It means that using our inner voice to remind ourselves to focus, to calm down, or to reassure ourselves. Attached below is a homelink about self-talk.
Part of our social emotional learning program is learning about being responsible digital citizens. Thus far, we have learned about private information (What is private information? What makes something private? How can we keep information private?). This week, we will learn more about staying safe online. Attached below is a tip sheet for helping your child continue to build his or her digital citizenship skills at home.
Math:
Students continue to work on two-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping in the classroom. There is a detailed diagram in the previous blog post with more information. To practice at home, your child can work on sections G and H on IXL, or you can practice in other ways listed on the first page of the homework log. If you think of any other fun ways to practice, please let me know! Below is an attachment for home practice from our current math chapter.
Reading:
All students are working on making predictions, making connections and asking questions before, during, and after reading. They are also working on retelling and answering questions about texts, in order to demonstrate their understanding. These are skills we will continue to practice throughout the year.
Writing:
Students are progressing through their narrative writing unit. They are currently working on writing stories about their lives and on including as much detail as possible, in order to really paint a picture for their readers. We do this by including all of our senses and our feelings (ex: What did you see around you? How did you feel?). We will continue to work on this throughout the trimester.
Spelling:
Students are practicing their spelling patterns in the classroom. In order to prepare for their weekly spelling tests, you are encouraged to practice together at home. For ideas, you can look at the first page of your child's homework log. If you think of any other fun ways to practice, please don't hesitate to share!
Thank you for your time! I look forward to seeing you at Diversity Night on Wednesday!
